Hungry for knowledge? Vending machine dispenses random book

4 hrs.

For two dollars, a hand-built vending machine in Toronto will dispense a random used book into your eager hands. It's a new twist on the traditional cheap or free items often found in boxes or carts outside used book?stores.

You can find the vending machine at the Monkey's Paw, an second-hand?book store on Dundas street. The shop focuses on odd and antique books, but every dealer ends up with a lot of books that for one reason or another just aren't going to fly off the shelves.

Many have them in boxes for a dollar each or sell them in bulk. But Stephen Fowler, proprietor of the Monkey's Paw, had a better idea. He thought a vending machine would be a great feature, although he originally pictured it as a operated by a person concealed inside. His friend Craig Small was more ambitious, however, and actually built a mechanical one out of an old locker; they call it the Biblio-mat.

Fowler described the machine as a success to book news magazine Quill & Quire, although he says he doesn't make any money on the books:

Of the people who have used the thing so far, almost every person has been pleasantly surprised and completely amused. In fact, this is something?I've?observed in the used-book trade: people are always looking for meaning. They?ll get a book and feel as though it was psychically selected for them.

On the outside, the machine is charmingly retro, resembling an enormous packet of?cigarettes. Inside, it is also charmingly retro: A set of pulleys operated electronically, dumping a book from one of three piles into the chute, through which it is, as creator Craig Small puts it, "delivered with a satisfying clunk into the receptacle below."

The Biblio-mat is operational but currently in "beta," says Fowler, perhaps due to the unpredictable nature of a large book falling down a tube. You can watch the machine in action in this video by Small on Vimeo.

Choosing An Injury Lawyer - references and education directory

Have you have recently been hurt in a car or truck accident, burned or injured by chemical exposure, hurt on a construction site, or simply frustrated by an insurance company that has refused to pay benefits that are owed to you? If the answer is yes, you need to talk with a personal injury lawyer! The goal of this article is to help you better understand how to select the proper firm.

How experienced should the law firm be that you choose? An injury lawyer should be more than just ?competent.? The firm you choose could mean the difference between not getting what you deserve and being wildly surprised by the outcome. The law firm that you choose to represent you should be ?remarkable?. The injury and accident lawyer you end up selecting, should provide you with all the resources needed to help with all aspects of your case, answer important questions, prepare voraciously for trial, try your case (if need be) and always be prepared to argue forcefully on your behalf.

A remarkable law firm works daily to exceed your expectations. They will work to get you compensation to cover damages you have suffered, which may include but are not limited to, medical and surgical costs, lost work time (wages), anxiety, loss of consortium, pain and suffering, mileage and many out of pocket costs that you may face. Remarkable means following up with clients promptly. It means cultivating a reputation for being tough but fair, savvy and compassionate. A good law firm will make sure the clients feel comfortable, but at the same time, they need to send a message, loud and clear, to insurance companies and liable parties that they mean business. They are constantly building and using their credentials for the benefit of the clients.

Injury and accident victims often find themselves in a kind of shock after a traumatic event and do not always act swiftly enough. When a scary event disrupts everything in their world, it is only human nature to ?wait a beat? to get your thoughts together before moving forward, but this is a dangerous approach and may not be the best idea. Here?s the reason why: Evidence from the accident or injury may get lost or even be destroyed in the hours and days after the accident. Witness recollections will grow fainter and more inaccurate as time passes after the incident. Even your own memory of the event will give way to hazier, less accurate memories. And even worse, if you wait too long after the accident or injury, you may lose your ability to make a claim altogether, even if you have compelling evidence on your side, due to the ?statute of limitations? in that state.

Every personal injury case is different. Choose an auto accident lawyer that will give you the professional attention you need to prosecute your case. Make sure they listen to what you want and need and help you feel calm, comfortable, and taken care of throughout your case. Most injury law firms takes cases on a contingency basis. This means that the clients do not pay, until they win a trial verdict or reach a settlement.

Can ?Social Risk Assessment? protect China's environment? ? Legal ...

I?ve just returned from a month in Qingdao, China, so this story in the New York Times caught my eye. China?s new leadership has announced that it will require a social risk assessment before any major industrial project can be begun. The idea is to forestall the increasingly violent environmental protests that have caused the cancellation of several recent projects. The story encapsulates for me some key differences between environmental policy in the US and in China ? differences in goals, institutional context, and the role of public oversight.

The adoption of social risk assessment makes explicit what has long been a key distinction between the US and China in terms of the goals of environmental policy ? the US has a series of substantive environmental goals, arrived at through our democratic process and implemented through our substantive environmental laws. China, lacking that democratic process, also lacks clear commitment to substantive environmental goals. China?s environmental goals (as Alex Wang explains in this forthcoming Harvard Environmental Law Review paper) are derivative of the Party leadership?s primary goals of encouraging economic growth and maintaining social stability. Essentially, China?s environmental goal is one of satisficing ? it wants to protect the environment only if and to the extent that environmental protection is necessary to support economic development and maintain social stability. Social risk assessment more directly targets that goal than environmental impact assessment, so it?s understandable that China would move in that direction. The move seems odd, and perhaps even illegitimate, from a US perspective because our goals are different. We want to protect the environment for the wide variety of benefits it provides society as a whole, and in some cases because we view environmental health or integrity as valuable in themselves. We are uncomfortable with the ways that the National Environmental Policy Act, our environmental assessment law, can be used by NIMBY types to deflect environmental impacts from their neighborhood to others. A social risk-based policy seems to invite precisely that kind of ?competition? to push development somewhere else, but that may be exactly what China?s leaders are looking for if their goal is to maximize economic development while keeping social unrest within tolerable limits.

Which brings us to the differences in institutional context and public participation. In the US, the projects that have triggered massive protests in China would have been subject to a public review process, not through NEPA but rather through air and water pollution permitting requirements. They would also be governed by at least reasonably clear standards requiring use of best available technology and forbidding violation of air or water quality standards. The public process serves to make decisionmakers aware of the extent and intensity of public opposition to the project; provides an opportunity for project proponents to explain any local benefits and highlight the controls being required; and at least in theory ensures that the project doesn?t cause unacceptable human health or environmental impacts. Of course we know those processes don?t work perfectly in the US ? the environmental justice movement has shown us that poor or minority communities often end up bearing a disproportionate share of the pollution load. But it seems to roughly serve the purpose of China?s social risk assessment.

Indeed, I suspect the goal of social stability would be better served by adopting a more public process for environmental impact assessment and permitting, subject to clear, mandatory standards and backed up by a realistic prospect of enforcement by public officials or citizens. That would give the populace an alternative to violent protests, and would allow the public to identify their concerns openly. I find it hard to imagine quite how the social risk assessment process will work, absent that kind of public process and absent public confidence that complaints won?t bring on punishments like the confinement in informal ?black jails? recently documented by NPR?s Frank Langfitt.

China?s new leaders may understand the difficulty of assessing public discontent without opening decisionmaking processes to public review and comment. At the same press conference where the social risk assessment requirement was announced, environment minister Zhou Shengxian also pointed out that China is now ordering government agencies to make environmental impact assessments publicly accessible on the internet. Perhaps that is a tentative step toward a more open process and a more positive role for the public in environmental policy.

I?d love to hear what our China experts (and readers) think about this development.

Bomb threats received at 8 Washington courthouses

Updated yesterday at 11:46 PM

Eight courthouses in Washington reported bomb threats late Thursday afternoon. ?The courthouses were in Thurston, Chelan, Columbia, Benton, Adams, Douglas, Pacific and Clark counties.

All but the Thurston County Courthouse was given the "all clear" by 6 p.m.? Authorities gave the all clear to Thurston County courthouse by 8:10 p.m.

Officials said a man called the Thurston County Clerk's Office and said multiple explosive devices had been planted on the property. ?Dogs from the Washington State Patrol arrived at the scene and were going through the county's three evacuated buildings, searching for any incendiary devices. No devices were found.

Thurston County employees have been on edge for the past couple of months after a district court judge received threatening phone calls. ?That judge later had some liquid thrown in his face, which injured him. ?At this point, no connection has been made to that case and the bomb threats.

Authorities said they were trying to locate the man responsible for the threats.

Just two weeks ago a similar string of bomb threats was made in Nebraska. ?The Thurston County Sheriff's Office says the calls there were similar to the ones made in Washington. ?In July, Ohio was rocked with yet another string of bogus bomb calls to courthouses prompting evacuations and panic in all three states.

A law enforcement source tells KING 5 NEWS the Washington State Patrol will help coordinate the 8 local investigations. ?Thurston County said it's detectives planned on reaching out with counterparts in Nebraska to see if there is a broader disturbing trend of these costly hoaxes.

(AP) ? As Colombian rockero Juanes took home the best album award, Mexican brother-sister duo Jesse & Joy and their pop hit "Corre!" ran away with four awards at the 13th Annual Latin Grammys.

Hosted by actors Cristian De La Fuente and Lucero, Thursday night's event attracted stars from across the world and from dozens of Latin musical genres to the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Just like at a big family party, new faces shared the spotlight with older generations, and traditional styles mixed with electronica and Vegas dancers on stage.

Traditional Mexico met Las Vegas in a colorful number featuring Oaxaca native Lila Downs, Afro-Colombian singer Toto la Momposina and dancers in regional costumes, Carnival masques and skeleton makeup.

"What a great joy. Thank God, and all the fans," Juanes said as he dragged Dominican mereguero Juan Luis Guerra, who produced "MTV Unplugged," to the stage to accept the mini-gramaphone for best album at the close of the ceremony.

The winner for best new artist, the Mexican DJ trio 3ball MTY, threw down beats with America Sierra and Sky Blu of LMFAO. Pitbull performed "Don't Stop the Party" with dancers in gold spangled bikinis and hot pants. Juanes jammed with legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.

Michel Telo, the Brazilian sertanejo or country music singer, performed his hit, "Ai si eu te pego,"with Blue Man Group. Bachata heartthrob Prince Royce sang with veteran Mexican singer-songwriter Joan Sebastian. But the applause was also strong for the 1980s hit, "Yo No Te Pido la Luna," a duet between Spaniard Sergio Dalma and Mexican singer Daniela Romo, sporting a short silver hairdo following her bout with breast cancer.

Jesse & Joy also won for best contemporary pop vocal album for "Con Quien se Queda el Perro" and best short video for "Me voy."

"Thanks to people like Juanes and Juan Luis Guerro who have inspired us. Love and peace," Jesse said.

Guerra, who came into the ceremony as the leading nominee with six bids, won producer of the year for Juanes' album "MTV Unplugged."

Guerra performed "En el Cielo No Hay Hospital," which brought the audience to its feet to dance, and for a standing ovation.

Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Don Omar and Uruguayan alt rockers Cuarteto de Nos won two Latin Grammys each.

Downs won best folkloric album for "Pecados y Milagros." Colombian singer Fonseca won for best tropical fusion album, and Los Tucanes de Tijuana won best norteno album for "365 Dias," the narco-corrido band's 32nd album.

Milly Quezada brought home two statuettes, including best contemporary tropical album for "Aqui estoy yo."

"Long live merengue! Long live the Dominican Republic!" she said as she accepted the award. She also thanked Guerra, who helped produce the album.

Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval won three Latin Grammys, two for "Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You)," but said these awards was just exciting as his first.

"The emotion is the same because one puts the same effort into each recording and the fact that the work is received well and respected by the public is very satisfying," he said.

The Latin Grammy celebration kicked off Wednesday with a tribute to Person of the Year winner, Caetano Veloso, one of the founders of the Tropicalismo movement.

The Brazilian singer, composer and activist sang in Spanish and Portuguese before Pitbull and Sensato closed with "Crazy People."

The event was broadcast live on Univision.

Leaf Energy closer to patent grant for Bio-Ethanol production process

Pdf Friday, November 16, 2012 by Angela Kean

?s (ASX: LER) patent applications for the novel pre-treatment of Cellulosic Biomass for Bio-Ethanol production are due for Patent Cooperation Treaty publication on the 6th December 2012.

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international patent law treaty that provides a unified procedure for filing patent applications to protect inventions in each of its contracting states.

A PCT application, which establishes a filing date in all contracting states, must be followed up with the step of entering into national or regional phases to proceed towards grant of one or more patents.

The patent applications for the Glycerol Bio-refinery Process are part of the joint intellectual property developed under the Collaboration and Licence Agreement between , Syngenta, Queensland University of Technology, and QUTBluebox.

has rights to these patents in Australasia, and is also in the process of obtaining rights to the intellectual property in India, Thailand, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mauritius, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The patent application titled ?Methods for Converting Lignocellulosic Material to Useful Products? (Glycerol Bio-refinery process) describes the process developed at the Queensland University of Technology.

is working towards the first major cellulosic ethanol production project in Australia.

The company plans to profile the ground breaking Glycerol Bio-refinery Process in a pilot scale demonstration of cellulosic ethanol production from sugarcane bagasse, set to be the first major pilot scale production of any second generation biofuel in Australia.

The production of biofuels from waste agricultural biomass requires an integrated process that starts with the breakdown of the fibre (pre-treatment), conversion of the pre-treated fibre into sugars and the subsequent production of ethanol and co-products.

There are several pre-treatment processes that are effective at breaking down fibre, but most require high temperatures, resulting in high energy use and the production of sugar degradation compounds that inhibit the subsequent fermentation.

In many pre-treatment processes, the chemicals used are expensive.

The ?Glycerol Bio-refinery Process? overcomes these problems by being effective at much lower temperatures than other benchmark pre-treatments.

At these lower temperatures, energy use is reduced and losses of sugars to degradation products are greatly reduced.

Glycerol production has increased rapidly around the world as a waste product from biodiesel production and is a low cost chemical to use in pre-treatment.

Data published in the patent specification for the Glycerol Bio-refinery Process shows that after 24 hours the process has liberated over 90% of the digestible cellulose.

These results have been successfully repeated at pilot scale, at the Mackay Renewable Bio-commodities pilot plant operated by Queensland University of Technology.

Large target market

Australians spend about $50 billion on energy each year and 35% of that amount is related to transportation costs.

Sugarcane bagasse has the potential to provide sufficient ethanol for 14% of Australia?s automotive gasoline requirement and the market in Queensland and New South Wales alone is enough for 1,000 megalitres, a $700 million market.

E10 is a very popular fuel in New South Wales with 40% of the market. If there was a 10% ethanol mandate across Australia that would equate to a 2,000 megalitre, $1,400 million market.

The use of waste cellulosic feedstocks such as bagasse means that there is no competition with food requirements or land used for food production, a significant drawback with other feedstocks.

The production of ethanol from waste cellulosic biomass also has major carbon benefits, with reductions of 70% to 86% estimated for cellulosic ethanol use in comparison to standard fuels.

Deadline Friday for states to make health insurance choice - WQAD 8

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad

by Kayleigh McCullough

(WHO-TV) ? Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has until Friday to make a big decision on how Iowa will administer part of the Affordable Care Act.

The healthcare reform law, passed in 2010, requires states to create a health insurance exchange, which is a marketplace of insurance plans that federal officials say would drive down health insurance costs.

Governor Branstad has to decide by Friday which of three options Iowa will choose. Those include: Iowa starting its own exchange, a partnership exchange with the federal government, or having the federal government set up its own exchange here.

State Senator Jack Hatch says the Governor has avoided making a decision until now, but time is running out.

?We?re pretty far behind the schedule, and we need to have this conversation with the Governor and his people, and the stakeholders as soon as possible,? Hatch said.

But the Branstad administration says the reason no decision has been made is because the federal government isn?t giving them answers to their questions.

Branstad?s spokesperson Tim Albrecht said, ?Make no mistake, Obamacare is expensive, but we don?t have our questions answered yet by the federal government to know exactly what the price tag will be. Governor Branstad will work with federal officials as well as Senate leadership because the reality is, you can throw any plan out there that you want, but it?s not going to work until we get these questions answered? from the federal government.?

Hatch says the state should opt for a partnership with the federal government for now because that gives Iowa lawmakers more time to create a plan of their own.

HP clarifies Windows 8 consumer PC downgrade and warranties

November 15th, 2012 by Rahul Leave a reply ?

HP isn?t supporting consumer PCs downgrades from Windows 8 to Windows 7. However, the company has clarified that, if you do change operating systems anyway, your consumer Windows 8 PCs will still be under warranty.

It?s been a confusing few days in HP laptop and desktop land. For a brief time, it appeared that HP would support Windows 8 consumer PCs downgrading to Windows 7. Microsoft would not have been amused! Microsoft?s official licensing policy restricts Windows 8 downgrades to Windows 8 Pro users.

After I spoke several times with HP, we now know what?s what with HP?s Windows 8 consumer PCs. HP told me, ?HP has updated this post, providing additional information that should clarify this topic for HP customers? and the official HP Windows 8 to Windows 7 downgrade answer is:

Yes, customers can downgrade to Windows 7, but Microsoft has different terms regarding users? downgrade rights and paths. HP recommends customers check with Microsoft for the terms governing their specific operating system edition.

Customers who are able to and choose to downgrade their HP Windows-8 compatible products to Windows 7 will remain protected by HP product warranties. However, HP has not tested all Windows 8 platforms for Windows 7 and we may not have your particular drivers available. If you choose to install a different operating system (OS) and have a problem that requires HP support, you may need to restore the original OS to fully diagnose your problem. Please check with HP Customer Care for questions related to your specific product.
So the bottom line now is that If you move your consumer HP PC to another operating system, including Linux, Windows 7 or anything else you can get to run with Windows 8?s alternative operating system unfriendly UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot you will still be covered by HP?s warranty. For useful support, however, you?ll still need to be ready to switch your PC back to Windows 8.

In addition, HP still won?t guarantee that they?ll have Windows 7 drivers for its Windows 8 retail/consumer PCs. Since Windows 8 as an operating system is barely out of the gate, it seems odd to me that HP would no longer offer drivers for what clearly the more popular ?modern? version of Windows. Still, it is what it is so don?t count on your HP Windows 8 consumer PCs being completely compatible with Windows 7. In short, if you want WIndows 7 on your PC, insist on buyinga computer with Windows 7 already installed.

Matt Crowe - Founder and CEO of AHHHA

Matt Crowe - Founder and CEO of AHHHA

Plain and simple: execute, execute, execute. And work my ass off doing whatever it takes to get the job done.

Since establishing his first business at age 16, Matt?s journey as an entrepreneur has led to a variety of successful business endeavors in an assortment of industries. In 2011, he founded AHHHA, an online platform that facilitates collaboration between innovators and trendsetters. AHHHA allows people with creative ideas to share their thoughts and receive insight from other collaborators on the web in order to turn the a concept into an executable product, business, or social movement. Visitors can stake their claim to in a new idea or provide other users with feedback and comments to improve their innovation, with the overarching goal being to produce tangible products and services. He calls it ?social ideation,? as opposed to social media or networking.

As the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AHHHA, Matt Crowe has maintained intimate involvement through all stages of the business? development, from writing the algorithms and developing the technology for the platform, to recruiting advisors, investors, developers, and other talented partners. Matt has been featured on CNN, Forbes, The New York Times, BBC, and Entrepreneur Magazine and he tries to keep an active voice in the entrepreneurial and personal development scene nationally and continue to write, speak, and motivate others from my his philosophical approach to business and life.

What are you working on right now?

Building AHHHA:, the product, team building, fundraising, coordinating university research studies, traveling to meet with partners, speaking events, hustling, innovating, creating, working closely with my team and ultimately trying to change the world with our Social Ideation platform?one idea at a time. It?s more than a full time job ? I live and breathe the brand as the Founder and CEO.

Where did the idea for AHHHA come from?

After years of struggling being an innovator and person having ideas all the time, and not being part?of the ?lucky sperm club? ? I realized that for myself and others, the reality of successfully turning an idea successfully into a product, company, or service is nearly impossible without the right resources, tools, connections and money. I simply wanted to make it easier for the average everyday person to bring their ideas to life. I saw truly great ideas not getting off the ground because they lacked those resources and didn?t think that was right or fair. Ultimately I?m working to democratize the process.

What does your typical day look like?

I get up in the morning without an alarm clock, check emails, Facebook, news, ?meditate, exercise, shower, get into office (which is no joke a real Silicon Valley startup garage). I have between 300-400 emails per day and, a distributed team of people all over the world working all over the world on AHHHA. I check in with my team, go to meetings, eat lunch, spend the afternoon responding to emails and working on random crap -sometimes an afternoon siesta, then back to work for a few more hours, eat some dinner, and then back to work again until I can?t keep my eyelids open anymore?.and do it all over again the next day.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Plain and simple: execute, execute, execute. And work my ass off doing whatever it takes to get the job done.

What?s one trend that really excites you?

Online collaboration tools and the ability to connect with literally anyone /anywhere in the world. This will break open the floodgates of innovation.

What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?

To be honest I haven?t really had any jobs that I?d consider my ?worst job? ? and have done?a lot of nasty jobs when I was younger ?- from construction to interior demolition to working in a restaurant as a bus boy. All of them were dirty and nasty, but at the end of the day, someone had to do them and I made me money. I quickly learned that is was much better be the boss.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

I would go to Yale Undergrad and Harvard Business School.

Either that or I?d be a chef.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Don?t ever quit. Ever. Not matter what people say, or how hard it is or how tired and, worn out you are ? never ever ever ever give up. People will always try to bring you down to their level and will tell you all the reasons why you can?t or shouldn?t simply because that?s what ?they? would do. There is no greater glory in the world that proving people wrong when all the odds were are against you.

What is one problem you encountered as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

Investors are like lemmings, and most of them aren?t nearly as smart as they try to shout the world pretend they ar- especially VCs. Weeding out the jerks with egoss the size of Oklahoma and finding the right financial partners for long term success takes a lot of time, and trial, and and error. It?s and very similar to dating, since ultimately you?re going to be married to these guys for many, many years. I think it?s really important to trust your own intuition in these scenarios, since generally speaking your gut feeling is almost always right.

What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?

?Ideas are cheap, execution is rare.?

Business ideas are easy to come by and simply solutions to problems.any idea is simply a solution to a problem. One example is I?ve been thinking about starting a super hip wicked new restaurant chain selling only real Chicago Style Hot Dogs and Italian Beef?in California ? since there is no good food in Northern California?and everyone else I know in the my area I live are also?screaming for something truly great delicious as well.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you go about it?

I?d get rid of all the douchebags ? I mean like just completely wipe them out and ship them off to Mars to fend for themselves ? like when Great Britain ?sent prisoners to Australia. The problem with people is they let their own ego get the best of them and can end up being assholes.

I also think there is far too much loneliness, sadness and depression in the world because of technology and the ?false? sense of connection. That said, people forget that what brings us together as humans is our vulnerabilities, and genuine relationships are more important than any other thing in the world ? they give life meaning, provide us with joy and love, and unforgettable experiences.

Tell us a secret.

You don?t even have to speak a single word and I can already sense everything about you. I and have an incredibly strong intuition and discernment.

What are your three favorite online tools or resources and what do you love about them?

Yammer: Lets me run my company and communicate with my team from anywhere in the world.
Google: Seriously everything ? docs, phone, emails, etc ? makes life easier.
Craigslist: I mean where else can you sell your random sh*t and have a search for missed connections all in the same place?

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Napoleon Hills? Think and Grow Rich. Because everyone has the ability to achieve any and all of the goals in life they want, and the only thing that holds them back is themselves.

Three people we should follow on Twitter and why?

@scottlazerson ? a superconnector.
@mittromney it?s an election year, and this one will determine the fate of America and it?s time to get the US back on track with a real leader.
@tonyrobbins ? he?s the very best peak performance coach and a true inspirational leader that everyone should know, follow and learn from.

When was the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?

Driving down the road and thinking how unreal my life really is. Having gone through all of the experiences, ups and down, pain, heartache, excitement joy and that I?m still going strong!! I never thought I?d be where I am right no living in California, being the Founder of a super cool Internet startup trying to change the world.

Who is your hero?

Richard Branson. I mean, he?s?a branding genius!

Why did you choose something as hard as AHHHA to tackle??

I never wanted to do the easy things in life, and have always been driven by challenges. Ultimately true leaders and innovators can swim against the current if they truly believe in what they?re doing and use their own tenacity, passion, creativity, and perseverance to succeed.

What would you do if you no longer had to work and there were no physical or financial constraints?

I would be a motivational speaker.

TI details the wireless power chip in the Lumia 920, offers four times the charging area

If you're one of the first on your block to have picked up a Nokia Lumia 920, you might wonder why it's so forgiving with where you set it down on the wireless charging pad. TI is more than willing to share. The 920, 820, Fatboy charging pillow and JBL PowerUp speaker all use a new TI bq500410A controller whose support for new transmitters gives it a charging area four times larger than we're used to. The 2.76 by 0.79 inches of coverage might not sound like much, but it's much wider than the previous 0.71 square inches while preserving a 70 percent efficiency and a safety cutoff if something gets in between. As a companion, there's a bq51050B chip launching at the same time that represents the first Qi receiver with its own built-in battery charger, which TI claims can charge more quickly and in less space than its rivals. Anyone embracing Nokia's vision of Windows Phone 8 can get their hands on devices using the wireless power chips today; we're only left hoping that TI's official news means other phone makers can tag along.

Obama victory spells trouble for Israel's Netanyahu

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces an even more awkward time with Washington and re-energized critics at home who accused him on Wednesday of backing the loser in the U.S. presidential election.

With Iran topping his conservative agenda, Netanyahu will have to contend with a strengthened second-term Democratic president after four years of frosty dealings with Barack Obama and a rift over how to curb Tehran's nuclear program.

Facing his own re-election battle in January, polls give Netanyahu little chance of losing but perceptions that he has mishandled Israel's main ally have been seized on by opponents.

"I will continue to work with President Obama to ensure the interests that are vital for the security of Israel's citizens," Netanyahu said in a short, congratulatory statement hailing what he called strong strategic relations with Washington.

But in remarks underscoring a rift with the United States over possible Israeli military action against Iran, Netanyahu said in an interview broadcast on Israel's Channel 2 this week: "If there is no other way to stop Iran, Israel is ready to act."

Relations between Netanyahu and Obama hit a new low two months ago after the Israeli leader said nations which failed to set "red lines" for Iran - which denies seeking atomic arms - did not have the "moral right" to stop Israel from attacking.

Such comments, along with financial backing for Republican candidate Mitt Romney from a U.S. casino magnate who is also one of Netanyahu's biggest supporters, were seized upon by critics as evidence the Israeli leader was trying to undermine Obama.

Netanyahu denied he was interfering in U.S. politics.

But former Israeli ambassador to Washington, Sallai Meridor, suggested that Obama would not easily forget that Netanyahu had created a perception that Israel wanted Romney to defeat him.

Obama is "very strategic, very disciplined", Meridor said during a panel discussion on the U.S. election at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.

"But I don't think we can just assume that what happened between them over past four years will have just evaporated," he said. "When people fight for their political life and have the perception that their partner is trying to undermine their chances, it's not going to disappear."

One of the Israeli prime minister's own leading coalition allies, Eli Yishai of the religious Shas party, said simply: "It's not a very good morning for Netanyahu."

PEACE TALKS

For the Palestinians, Obama's win over Romney - who offended them by suggesting during a visit to Israel in July that cultural differences accounted for the weakness of their economy compared with Israel's - stirred little emotion.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement he hopes Obama "continues his efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East". U.S.-backed peace talks with Israel collapsed in 2010 over Israeli settlement building.

At the forum in Tel Aviv, Dan Shapiro, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, said it would be unrealistic to think Obama would choose to ignore the Palestinian issue in his second term.

"It always finds its way back onto the agenda. You can't expect this to go away or remain on the back-burner," he said, without offering a prediction of what Obama might do.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, unemployed Narmeen Taha, 37, voiced hope that freedom from re-election pressure might make Obama readier to take the Palestinians' side: "Maybe Obama, now that he doesn't have to worry about re-election, will exert more pressure on Israel than during his first term.

"But I also don't think we'll see a sudden turnaround."

Obama's victory could complicate Netanyahu's run in Israel's January 22 national ballot, which opinion polls show he will win.

Former premier Ehud Olmert, who accuses Netanyahu of harming Israel's "most vital interests", was more likely to announce his candidacy now that Obama was returned to office, analysts said.

Olmert unsuccessfully pursued peace with the Palestinians before resigning in 2008 over corruption allegations. Should he run, Olmert is widely expected to seek to unite centrist and left-wing parties into a new bloc trumpeting slogans warning of four more years of acrimony between Netanyahu and Obama.

"Netanyahu bet on the wrong president and got us into hot water with Obama," the opposition Kadima party said on Facebook.

In his message to Obama, however, Netanyahu adopted a phrase used lately by the president's own supporters to describe strategic relations with Washington as "stronger than ever".

Will Dynamo keep the upper hand?

Wednesday?s game on the big field at Livestrong Sporting Park promises to look nothing like Sunday?s scrappy match on a smaller patch of beaten down grass in Houston.

It will surely still be physical, but a surface more conducive to a skillful game will mean a little more soccer, a little less scuffling for 50-50 balls and scrapping for second balls.

Either way, Sporting KC has its work cut out. Goalkeeper Tally Hall and the Dynamo back line have a two-goal cushion thanks to Sunday?s win in Texas, so a draw will do for a highly confident Dynamo team that knows its way around the MLS playoffs. In fact, even a one-goal loss would suffice.

Kickoff: 9 p.m. ET, Livestrong Sporting Park, MLS Live

Houston leads the total goals series, 2-0

On the Houston Dynamo

  • Houston is 5-1 in the playoffs over the last two years. Let that sink in.
  • Dominic Kinnear?s team was just 3-9-5 on the road this year, with a minus-12 goal difference. But ? the Dynamo did go into Chicago last week and come out with well-managed win.
  • More critical in framing this one is Houston?s relative success at Livestrong Sporting Park. They haven?t lost in three appearances since a 3-0 loss last year in Houston?s frist trip to 18-month-old stadium. Houston stunned SKC in last year?s Eastern Conference final and managed two draws at Livestrong this year.
  • Hall was excellent in the September draw (1-1), making seven saves.
  • He?ll need to be on his game again, especially if Jermaine Taylor can?t play. Bobby Boswell?s central partner along the back line limped out of Sunday?s contest and remains questionable, although he did train Tuesday before the team left Houston. Canadian international Andrew Hainault will man the position if Taylor cannot.
  • Few central midfielders will cover as much ground over a match as Ricardo Clark, who sets up at the top of Houston?s midfield diamond, but drops reliably in alongside Adam Moffat as the opposition draws in closer to Houston goal.
  • Kinnear, on his team?s subdued celebration following Sunday?s win and the understanding that nothing has been accomplished just yet: ?The music is not boucning off the wall in the locker room. These guys have been through this before. They know what?s happening. This series with Kansas City is 180 minutes and a lot can happen out there. ? We can?t let down.?

(MORE: Analysis of Sunday?s match)

On Sporting Kansas City

  • Sporting Kansas City is the Eastern Conference champion and plenty of people within the league and close to it had circled K.C. as the site they suspected MLS Cup 2012 would land. That?s in some doubt now.
  • The home team Wednesday suddenly has a hole to fill. Defensive midfielder Julio Cesar suffered a quadriceps injury late in Sunday?s 2-0 loss. Ordinarily, it wouldn?t be a huge blow because Paulo Nagamura could fill in quite capably. Except that he?s hurt too. So?
  • SKC center backs Aurelien Collin and Matt Besler won more than their share of battles Sunday with Houston?s big stable of big forwards. (Although Collin picked a bad time to get stretched out of position, allowing himself to be turned en route to the Dynamo?s second goal).
  • Striker C.J. Sapong contributed some adequate hold-up work to the effort, and he made the Houston center backs work. But wingers Jacob Peterson and Kei Kamara need to be better Wednesday.
  • To win outright (without the extended period or penalty kicks) SKC will need to score three goals. How many times did they score more than two over a 34-game season? Just three times.
  • Graham Zusi led the league with 15 assists this year; Houston?s Brad Davis tied for fourth with 12.
  • Midfielder Roger Espinoza: ?It?s going to be very tough, but it?s not impossible. I?ve seen it happen many, many times. I don?t think I?ve been on a team before that?s done that, but it?s happened before. This is what we play for ? to make amazing things happen.?

(MORE: No excuses offered from Peter Vermes)

Bottom line:

It really is about the first goal Wednesday.

If Houston gets that one, Sporting Kansas City?s uphill climb goes from tough to something just this side of impossible. ?But if Sporting KC can turn up with the opener, the Blue Hell of Livestrong Sporting Park will be about as loud and blue as you can possibly imagine ? and it?s not hard to imagine a second goal dropping in short order as the energy, initiative and motivation soars.

Sporting Kansas City certainly has the ability to carve out a memorable night ? but it?s hard to bet against a cushioned, Kinnear-coached team in this one.

Self Improvement Information You Shouldn't Pass Up On | Rob ...

Putting your fears aside and admitting that you want to improve yourself is a huge step. Here are some self-help strategies that will give you ideas on what you could try.

Your core principles are important, and your actions should reflect them. Each person has a set of beliefs that determine who they are. Sticking to your core values will help your self esteem, if you?ve got a strong foundation to rely on. If your goals are grounded by your principles, you?ll be more consistent in pursuing them.

If you avoid making decisions, then you are denying yourself opportunities. You need to face these decisions with confidence, even if you aren?t totally sure. Being able to make good decisions sometime requires you to trust your instincts. Even mistaken decisions are valuable because they provide instructive learning experiences. You?ll make a better decision next time.

Treat everyone with respect, no matter what they can do or how much power those people may have. How you treat them reveals more about your own character, than it reveals about theirs.

Exercise is for everyone, not just people who are trying to lose a few pounds. There are many physical reasons for the need to exercise. Exercising stimulates your body to produce all kinds of chemicals that ultimately result in a happier, calmer you.

Focus on your true character and personality rather than your superficial appearance. Some people are blessed with natural good looks or the wealth to purchase designer duds. Your personality is what will prevail in your life. Your priority should be the enhancement of your inner beauty. Your outer beauty can be dealt with at a later time.

Take a notebook around with you to jot ideas in. Use a notepad app on your phone or even carry a real notepad with you. Make detailed notes, and later, when you have the chance and are feeling creative, take your ideas further.

Be more productive at work by getting the most out of your time there. Some say there is a trick that involves taking frequent breaks throughout the work day. It can seem like the opposite would be true, but taking mini breaks frequently will allow you to feel less bored, and get more done during the times you are working.

Complex Carbohydrates

If you are battling depression, it may be helpful to adjust your diet by increasing your intake of complex carbohydrates. If you are not getting enough complex carbs, you serotonin levels will be low. Increase your consumption of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, brown rice, assorted beans and whole grains to have a diet that is enriched in complex carbohydrates.

Good health is the cornerstone of self improvement. It is vital that you maintain motivation to eat well and exercise regularly. The better health you are in, the easier it will be to accomplish your goals in other areas.

You should listen far more than you should speak. This is particularly sage advice if you are working on your personal development. Don?t just listen to other people. Listen to yourself. Listening to your inner voice can help you understand what it is that you want, because it is hard to get what you want when you don?t understand what you need.

Give these tips a try and make note of any change in your feelings or thoughts. Remember to take a break from everything once in a while.

Open Ed's Business Woes: Textbook Pioneer Flat World Knowledge ...

Founded in 2007, Flat World Knowledge was one of the early pioneers in the move to bring free and open access to textbooks to students and educators. The independent publisher offered its learning content for free, giving students the access to texts in print, eBook form, eReaders, audiobooks and downloadable PDFs, etc. Produced by actual authors and reviewed by peers, Flat World allows teachers to modify and edit those texts to fit their particular class through its own simple editing tools, printing new copies on-demand.

With customizable, free texts on-demand, Flat World?s model won over many students, leading the company to claim that it had become one of the largest online publishers of free and open textbooks. Be that as it may, while many (aside from the big educational publishers) support the movement to make textbooks and educational content significantly more affordable ? and even free ? finding workable business models that support free and open access has proven challenging.

This week, Campus Marketplace reported that Flat World Knowledge has been forced to drop its free access to textbooks. The decision was made largely because of the cost of supporting free access. In other words it was a business decision that many have or will face as part of the shift to open learning.

Flat World offers its learning content for free, but charges for more convenient ways to access material for print or beefed-up versions and for study aids. By eliminating its free option, the company hopes to make its pricing more equitable for all of its institutional partners so that everyone is paying the same price.

The company will still offer bookstore partners to its so-called ?All Access Pass? that includes a digital version of its textbooks, such as eBook files, PDFs, audio, HTML functionality and study aids for $28 and will sell the pass on its homepage for $35. Textbooks themselves will start at $19.95.

It?s not a huge change for students or partners, and nearly all of the company?s partners are on board with the move (as, obviously, are the teachers and experts producing the textbooks), according to The Chronicle of Higher Ed. Even if students end up paying $20 to $25 for their textbooks, it?s still a very attractive alternative to the cost of traditional textbooks.

Obviously, the company does not want to say that its free content is cannibalizing the revenue generated from charging students and institutions for premium features and content, but it?s clear that the company didn?t quite get the balance right.

The big textbook publishers, who have warned about jumping into the deep end and offering learning content for free ? because they?re obviously worried about the de-valuation of educational content and the slimmer margins of the digital publishing world ? are probably enjoying this announcement somewhat. Flat World was one of the first (though hardly alone, iTunes U, 11 Learning and Boundless have all been pushing forward in this space) to go head-to-head against traditional publishers and has made some progress, as its textbooks are now in 4,000 classrooms at 2,000 schools worldwide.

Many have followed and progress has been made in the quality of open content (and the quality of its curation), as well as the availability of digital options as the bigs (Amazon, Apple) and companies like Inkling and Kno try to reduce prices ? or at the very least make digital textbooks more widely available. Unfortunately, although Flat World would never admit it, this announcement certainly serves as validation of the doubt over Open Educational Resources (OER) as a business concept.

Flat World has been a pioneer and some we?ve talked to assumed it might choose to go out of business before asking students to pay. But the world at large is coming back a bit from the overwhelming sense of entitlement to free content, and expectations are shifting. We?re moving to a time when publishers won?t be able to get away with charging $100 for a textbook, but there?s also mounting evidence that free isn?t exactly going to work either. Unless you?re a non-profit with significant financial backing, like CK12.

It also seems that, while it?s shift away from free may be understandable, Flat World has its own internal communication, management problems that it needs to address. Never a good sign.

Founded in 2007, Flat World Knowledge is the largest publisher of open college textbooks for students worldwide. Committed to making higher education more affordable and accessible, our course content is available in a range of low-cost formats, including a free online reader. To date, Flat World textbooks are used at more than 2,000 colleges in 44 countries. Backed by top venture capital firms, Flat World Knowledge was named the ???Best Discount Textbook Provider??? by the Education Resources People???s Choice...

Genetically engineered tomatoes decrease plaque build-up in mice

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? For the first time, genetically engineered tomato plants produced a peptide that mimics the actions of good cholesterol when eaten, researchers reported at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2012.

In the study, mice that ate the freeze-dried, ground tomatoes had less inflammation and reduced atherosclerosis (plaque build-up in the arteries).

"We have found a new and practical way to make a peptide that acts like the main protein in good cholesterol, but is many times more effective and can be delivered by eating the plant," said Alan M. Fogelman, M.D., senior author of the study and executive chair of the Department of Medicine and director of the Atherosclerosis Research Unit in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Researchers genetically engineered the tomatoes to produce 6F, a small peptide that mimics the action of ApoA-1, the chief protein in high density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol). They fed the tomatoes to mice that lack the ability to remove low density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) from their blood and readily develop inflammation and atherosclerosis when consuming a high-fat diet.

After the mice ate the tomatoes as 2.2 percent of their Western-style high-fat, calorie-packed diet, those given the peptide-enhanced tomatoes had significantly:

  • lower blood levels of inflammation;
  • higher paraoxonase activity, an anti-oxidant enzyme associated with good cholesterol and related to a lower risk of heart disease;
  • higher levels of good cholesterol;
  • decreased lysophosphatidic acid, a tumor promoter that accelerates plaque build-up in arteries in animal models; and
  • less atherosclerotic plaque.

"To our knowledge this is the first example of a drug with these properties that has been produced in an edible plant and is biologically active when fed without any isolation or purification of the drug," Fogelman said.

The innate ability of relationships to adapt for favorable consequences gives meaning and attractiveness to both men and women for experiencing bliss and happiness. The ups and downs couples experience in a relationship can give them stronger reasons to complement each other.

But when differences become serious problems, a relationship can pine for the healing touch. Problems with relationships are actually not hitches so far you have the zeal to work towards the betterment of your relationship. However, problems with relationships can upset and even kill a relationship when left unattended and uncared.

Being prepared for problems provides you better opportunities to deal with them, at least emotionally. Otherwise, even a small difference of opinion can cause bitterness and damage beyond repair. Problems With Couples Relationships

Blending Attitude With Gratitude

Relationships necessarily do not turn unfavorable for couples due to inclusion of a negative element as jealousy, infidelity and resentment. The lack of gratitude and appreciation can also create bad vibes for relationships. Lack of gratitude gives a feel that you consider your partner for granted and sideline the opportunities to enjoy the good things in life.

What if he cooks one day? Cooking is not one?s authority! This intrusion of attitude overpowers gratitude and the (few words of) appreciation or gestures which could have made your partner feel delighted (without your losing anything). If something stops you from ushering praise for your partner, it is a warning sign that you are going to face problem(s) sooner or later.?Expression of appreciation is very important, especially for men, to help your relationship traverse the journey (particularly during the ?downs?).

Thinking Beyond Repair

Problems with relationships can be evident when couples think beyond repair and correction. Comparison and superior thinking can upset relationships slowly and create pitfalls which may eventually become irreparable.

Successful relationships entail integration of two minds into one. Both partners need to understand that success for one is success for both while failure of one means failure for both. Celebration and concerns are meant for both partners. When both partners do not think for the sake of thinking but proving themselves and their superiority, problems abound. When you love your partner, you do not look down the fears of your partner. Depicting judgmental behavior can be an outcome of superior or inferior thinking, which seems an expression of ego, not love.

Imbalance Between Career and Relationship

Modern day relationships may begin at ambitious career junctions but they are also susceptible to end at career crossroads. Relationship can be taken so much for granted that it creates instability between both these crucial aspects of life.

Career is destined to make life better and relationship is meant to advance life towards bliss. If both are not balancing each other, both are likely to become rivals soon instead of associates.

Extra Marital Affair and Infidelity

When a person is unable to handle one partner, it is likely he/she will not be able to handle another. And this conflict is bound to cause problems in relationships!

For some couples, infidelity or extra marital affair may not bring the end of their relationships. It may be an opportunity to amend the relationship, although not always. If both can understand that they need each other and are complementary (rather than contradictory), there can be reason to expect revival of relationship. However, it is extremely difficult to gain trust once lost and often leads to the death of relationships.
